Nipigon sits on the only road linking eastern and western Canada, on the north shore of Lake Superior between Thunder Bay and Sault Sainte Marie. There is little between the villages out here, so most travellers stop for one night, refuel, walk the river trail and drive on. Anglers and hikers give it two or three nights as a base for charters, Ouimet Canyon and the Lake Superior water trail.

Getting around

A car is the only practical way to reach the canyon, Red Rock and the trailheads; the village core is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. Spirit Taxi covers local hops. Ontario Northland and Kasper buses stop in Nipigon but run a few days a week, so check times before you rely on them.

Day-use only, open Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving; a 1 km trail links two lookouts over a 100 m-deep canyon.

Drive or walk the Nipigon River Recreational Trail

The 10 km riverside trail links the Nipigon and Red Rock marinas; start at Red Rock and shuttle back if you want the full walk.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet highway town and generally safe; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dusk, long fuel gaps east of town, cold lake water and winter driving conditions.
  • Driving east on Highway 17, the next 24-hour fuel is in White River, about 270 km away: fill up before you leave.
  • Cell coverage is LTE, no 5G; expect gaps along the highway outside town.
  • The river trail's far sections are rated difficult with about 154 m of elevation gain: footwear, water and daylight needed.
  • Ouimet Canyon is day-use and gated in winter; the access road closes with snow.
