Rhenen is a small Nederrijn town of about 20,000 people on the south edge of the Utrecht Hill Ridge, 45 minutes by train from Utrecht. It has two anchors most travellers come for: Ouwehands Dierenpark, one of the country's busiest zoos and home to two giant pandas, and the Grebbeberg, a wooded ridge with a 1940 war cemetery and the May 1940 battle line. The compact centre, rebuilt after wartime damage, takes an hour on foot. Most people visit as a day trip; a single night is enough if you want the zoo at opening.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For the zoo and the Grebbeberg use bus 50 (towards Wageningen) from the station; bus 80 runs north towards Amersfoort and Veenendaal. Bikes can be rented in town (check locally). Trains run to Utrecht twice an hour.

Watch out

Safety

Rhenen is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are uneven dyke paths, fast cyclists on the ridge and the river's cold current. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Zoo tickets are dated and cheaper online; buy before you travel, especially at weekends.
  • The Grebbeberg cemetery is an active memorial site: keep quiet and do not picnic among the graves.
  • Cunerakerk tower access is limited to set hours and a small fee; the church itself is free.
  • Rhenen station is a 15-minute walk from the centre; there is no taxi rank to rely on.
