Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Saintes is a Roman crossroads town on the Charente, second city of Charente-Maritime after La Rochelle, with a walkable old town on both banks. The Germanicus arch, the amphitheatre and the Saint-Eutrope basilica carry two millennia of history in about half a day on foot. Most trips use it as a stop between La Rochelle and Bordeaux, or as a base for the Cognac vineyards and the Côte de Beauté beaches 30 km west.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is compact and largely pedestrianised: cathedral, arch, amphitheatre and both abbeys are within about 20 minutes on foot of each other, though the amphitheatre and Saint-Eutrope sit uphill. BUSS runs three urban lines (A, B, C) plus a station shuttle; a one-hour ticket is €1.10. Free bikes via the Cyclocom stations need a €150 deposit and ID, returned same evening.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Royan and the Côte de Beauté

go

Door to door: About 45 min by train

TER train from Saintes station, or N150 by car

Beach resort at the river mouth; pairs well with a Saintes morning.

La Rochelle

go

Door to door: About 1 h

TER or Intercité from Saintes station

Old port and aquarium; the regional capital, worth a full day.

Cognac

go

Door to door: About 40 min by train

TER towards Angoulême, or N141 by car

House tours need booking; the last tours leave mid-afternoon (check).

La Tremblade and the Marennes oyster beds

caution

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Car via D728, or bus connections towards Marennes

Awkward without a car; better as an overnight on the coast.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Vieux Saintes / Saint-Pierre

Pedestrianised old town around Rue Alsace-Lorraine and Rue Victor-Hugo; walk to the cathedral, arch and river. Best for one night without a car.

Saint-Pallais (right bank)

Quieter, around the Abbaye aux Dames and the station side; riverbank gardens, 10–15 min walk to the old town.

Around the railway station

Practical for early trains; about 15 min on foot from downtown, so not the pick if you want evenings in the old town.

Watch out

Safety

A calm small city; the real risks are heat on the uphill Roman sites, uneven medieval lanes, and river levels after winter storms. Standard French city precautions at night apply.
  • The amphitheatre and Saint-Eutrope basilica are uphill from the river: allow 20–25 min walking each way.
  • Much of the old town is pedestrianised and parking in the centre is limited; use the free edge-of-town car parks.
  • Some sights keep seasonal or reduced hours outside summer: check the tourist office site before a winter trip.
  • Summer inland temperatures run several degrees above the coast; carry water if you walk the Roman sites at midday.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LRH and BOD: last TER departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Saint-Pierre cathedral and Rue Alsace-Lorraine, the Germanicus arch and riverbank, the amphitheatre and Saint-Eutrope, Saint-Pallais and the Abbaye aux Dames.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (amphitheatre, Saint-Eutrope basilica, Abbaye aux Dames, Musée de l'Échevinage) and eat pages with last orders.
