Valdivia is the capital of the Los Ríos region, 850 km south of Santiago where three rivers meet, 15 km from the Pacific at Corral Bay. It is a walkable, low-rise city known for its German settler heritage, its craft beer and the 17th-century fort ruins downriver. Most travellers reach it by bus or a short flight from Santiago and use it as a two-night stop between the Lake District and Chiloé.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Colectivos (fixed-route shared taxis) and city buses cover the rest; buses run until about 20:00 on most routes and fares are low (check current fares). Taxis, Uber, InDrive and Didi operate in town. For Niebla and the coast, take the local bus from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Valdivia is a calm, walkable city and one of the safer stops in southern Chile. The real annoyances are winter rain, uneven pavements after dark and bars with no posted prices: ask before you sit.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug) is wet and cool: pack a rain shell.
  • Boat tours to the forts narrate in Spanish only; food is included, drinks are not.
  • Bus and colectivo fares change: confirm with the driver.
  • Some bars on Calle Esmeralda have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
