Puerto Plata is the north coast's working city with a resort strip attached: a Spanish fort, a cable car up Isabel de Torres, and the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua within an hour. Three to four nights covers the city sights and one adventure day; add nights if you want beach-only days or day trips to Sosúa and Cabarete. It is a beach-and-base town, not a walking city — pick your bed by whether you want the resort strip or the malecón.

Getting around
Taxis are the easy option and the priciest; guaguas (minivans) are cheapest but you need to know the route. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis, yellow vests) are quick and cheap — only if you accept two wheels. Renting a car (about US$60/day for a 4WD) makes Damajagua and the coast easy; roads are rough and local driving is aggressive.

Safety
- Propinas: friendly strangers who claim to work at your resort and then ask for US$30–60. If you do not recognise them, walk on.
- Vendors at the fort and on the beach are persistent; agree any chair or tour price before you sit or board.
- Some ATMs error out in English — try the Spanish menu.
- Motoconcho and scooter riding is high-risk here: helmets are rare and overtaking is casual.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; check forecasts before booking a non-refundable trip.
