Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and its main Aegean port, with a long waterfront promenade and a working city feel. The Kemeraltı bazaar, the Agora ruins and the archaeological museum are the sights; the food and the ferries are the pleasure. Ephesus, Selçuk, Çeşme and Alaçatı are all day-trip range. It suits travellers who want an easy airport and a real city before moving down the coast.

Ferries across the bay are cheap and a good way to see the waterfront. Ephesus is reached by İZBAN to Selçuk (about 1 hour 20 minutes) then a taxi or dolmuş, or by tour.
