- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod, settled in 1637, sitting at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal about 1 h 15 min by car from both Boston and Providence. It is a small town with a compact historic centre, three good museums and a barrier beach, and it works best as a first or last stop on a Cape trip rather than a base for the whole peninsula. Most visitors see the centre on foot in half a day and add a beach or the gardens.

Getting around
The village centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Everything else — Sandy Neck, Scusset Beach, Heritage Museums & Gardens, the canal — needs a car; there is no useful local bus. Plymouth & Brockton runs intercity coaches to most Cape towns, but you still need a car or taxi at the Sandwich end. Bicycle the canal service road if you have a bike.

Watch out
Safety
- Non-resident beach parking at town beaches needs a seasonal sticker (about $40, 2026 estimate) from the Town Hall Annex on Main St; Sandy Neck charges $10 a day and Scusset Beach $14 for Massachusetts residents and $20 for non-residents — confirm before you drive.
- Summer Sunday bridge traffic on Route 6 and Route 28 can add an hour or more; leave the Cape before noon or after 8 PM.
- Many museums and historic houses run mid-April or mid-June to mid-October only; outside that window confirm hours before driving.
- Restaurant kitchens in town close early outside July and August; check last orders.
- Canal and beach areas can be windy and cool even in July — bring a layer.
