Rencontre East

Go for 1–2 nights only if you accept the ferry timetable as your clock: no road in, no cars, one store. Otherwise skip and stay on the Burgeo or Fortune side.

Rencontre East is a ferry-only outport of about 115 people on Fortune Bay, reached by the MV Terra Nova from Pool's Cove (about 1 h 15 min) or Bay L'Argent (about 1 h 45 min). There is no road link, no car rental and one general store. You come for walking, boardwalks, bald eagles, salmon jumping into Rencontre Lake and a night in a place where ATVs are the main transport. Two nights is the practical maximum; one night is enough if the ferry times line up.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

On foot. The streets are dirt and there are no cars in the village; residents use ATVs. Bring waterproof footwear, and ask locally before walking past the last houses, since some paths cross private land or fishing stages.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, boggy unmarked trails and the ferry timetable. Carry cash, waterproofs and a charged phone, and treat the schedule as fixed.
  • The ferry is the only way in and out: miss it and you stay until the next sailing.
  • Winter service runs only on some days; check the provincial ferry schedule before booking anything else.
  • No bank, no ATM and no pharmacy: bring cash and any medication you need.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy; download offline maps and ferry timetables before you leave the terminal.
  • Trails are unmarked in places and can be boggy; tell someone where you are going.

  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: wharf and store, river and lake path, east-side cliff, boardwalk loop.
  3. Place pages with verified access notes (Rencontre Lake viewpoint, churches, community centre) and a food page with the store's hours.
  4. Storm and missed-ferry fixtures so arrival gates can go green.
