Siquijor is a small island province in the Visayas, about 22 km east of southern Negros, with a paved road around the coast and a mountainous interior. Most travellers arrive by ferry from Dumaguete and stay 2–3 nights in San Juan, using a rented scooter or tricycle to reach waterfalls, old churches and beaches. It is quiet, cheap and slow — not a place for a packed sightseeing schedule.

Getting around

One paved road circles the island. Rent a scooter (₱250–350 per day, 2016 prices — check) at the port, in San Juan or at most resorts; some resorts require bikes back by 6PM. Tricycles charge about ₱150–250 from Siquijor town to San Juan and around ₱1,000 for a full-day island tour (check). Jeepneys are cheapest (about ₱20 town to San Juan) but leave only when full. San Juan is spread out, so plan on wheels.

Watch out

Safety

Siquijor is a quiet, low-crime island; the real risks are scooter crashes on wet or gravel roads, strong currents at some beaches, and ferry cancellations in bad weather. Keep cash, keep your helmet on, and do not swim alone at unpatrolled beaches.
  • Ferry schedules and operators change; confirm departure times and ports the day before you travel.
  • ATMs are few: PNB in Larena (Visa only) and Metrobank in Siquijor town (Visa and Mastercard). Carry cash.
  • Mobile data is limited to larger towns and patchy elsewhere; hotel WiFi is often slow.
  • Some resorts ban outside food and drink, so budget for eating on site if you stay remote.
  • Cantabon Cave is locked and needs a registered local guide; arrange it in town first.
  • Riding a scooter here means gravel shoulders, dogs and rain — wear a helmet and check your travel insurance covers motorbikes.
