Bunratty is a village of about 300 people built around one sight: a 1425 castle with a folk park of over 30 collected buildings. It works as a single overnight before or after a Shannon flight, or as a half-day stop between Limerick and Ennis. There is no real town here, so two nights only makes sense if you are using it as a car base for County Clare.

Getting around

The village core is walkable in 10 minutes. Everything else — Shannon Airport, Sixmilebridge, the coast — needs a car, taxi or bus. Bus Éireann 343 links Limerick, Bunratty, Sixmilebridge and Shannon Airport hourly; the stop is by The Creamery Bar. No taxi firm is based in the village; taxis come from Shannon Airport or Sixmilebridge.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the N18 slip roads, unlit lanes on Lower Road after dark, and driving on the left after a long flight.
  • Bunratty Castle Hotel has been closed since a 2021 fire: do not book on an old listing.
  • Banquet and Irish Night seats are reservation-only and sell out in summer: book ahead on the official castle site.
  • The village sits on the old road, bypassed by the N18: drivers miss the turn, so follow signs for Bunratty Castle, not the N18.
  • B&Bs on Lower Road have no footpath lighting and no bus: arrange a taxi or drive.
  • Castle interiors are reached by narrow spiral stairs; not suitable for everyone.
