Cagliari is Sardinia's capital and its main airport gateway, on the south coast. The walled Castello hill, the Roman amphitheatre and the 8 km Poetto beach sit within one city, but they are spread out and the old town is steep. Two nights covers the core; add a third for a beach day or a day trip. It is a working city, not a resort, and the best months are May–June and September–October.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but hilly; CTM buses and the ARST light rail cover the rest. Buy tickets before boarding where you can and validate them on first use. Driving into the centre is a bad idea: several ZTL camera zones (Marina, Castello, Villanova, Stampace Alto and Basso, Poetto) fine you automatically.

Watch out

Safety

Cagliari is a safe city for its size; the real risks are pickpockets around Via Roma and the station, summer heat on the Castello climb, and ZTL fines if you drive into the old town.
  • ZTL camera zones cover most of the old town and Poetto: a rental car entering one gets a fine by post, months later.
  • Torre di San Pancrazio has been closed at times — check before climbing.
  • Poetto is free at the public sections; beach clubs charge for entry plus umbrella and lounger.
  • Summer heat and steep staircases in Castello: carry water and pace the climb.
  • Ferry and train timetables to the rest of Sardinia are thin on Sundays.
