Stockton-on-Tees is an industrial Tees crossing that turned into a service and retail town, with the 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway as its claim on history. The centre is compact and walkable, the riverside has the Infinity Bridge and Tees Barrage, and Preston Park holds the museum. Most travellers pass through on the way to Durham, Newcastle or the North York Moors; one night is enough unless you are here for a specific event.

Getting around

Most sights sit within a 20-minute walk of High Street, and the riverside path links the centre to the Infinity Bridge and Tees Barrage. Arriva and Stagecoach buses cover Norton, Billingham and Thornaby; Thornaby is the main rail station, half a mile south of the river, and Stockton station north of the centre only has the hourly Newcastle–Middlesbrough trains.

Watch out

Safety

A normal English town centre: the main risks are late-night drink crowds around High Street, unlit riverside paths after dark, and cold wet weather on the walk to the barrage. Use 999 for emergencies and 101 for non-urgent police matters.
  • Two stations: Thornaby has the ticket office, waiting room and toilets; Stockton is an unstaffed halt with machines only.
  • Splash swimming baths was expected to close for a replacement leisure facility: check before you go.
  • The Holy Trinity Church ruin at Trinity Green is fenced off; view it from outside.
  • Preston Park museum charges admission and the butterfly house and miniature railway cost extra.
