Gravina in Puglia sits on a karst plateau above a ravine on the city's east side, with rock churches cut into the canyon walls and a web of cellars and tunnels under the streets. It is a small city, not a resort: the historic centre is walkable in an afternoon, and most travellers use it as a stop between Bari and Matera. Two nights is the useful maximum unless you are using it as a base for the Alta Murgia.

The historic centre is on foot, and the ravine paths are steep with loose stone. A large ZTL covers the centre, so park outside it and walk in; blue parking slots are paid. Ferrovie Appulo Lucane trains link Gravina with Bari and Altamura, and buses cover the Bari airport run.
