Pinsk

Pinsk is a half-day stop for its Baroque architecture and river setting, not a base: go if you have a spare afternoon between Brest and Minsk, otherwise skip.

Pinsk, at the confluence of the Pina and Prypiat rivers, was first mentioned in 1097 and retains a fine Franciscan convent and Jesuit college complex. With about 130,000 people, it is compact enough to see the main sights along the riverbank in 3–4 hours. Most travellers use it as a break on the Brest–Minsk railway line.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Belarus ↗Check your own government travel advice for Belarus before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Belarus ↗Land crossings from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia open and close on short notice; confirm the crossing on the day with that country's border guard.
  • Belarus ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Belarus before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Pinsk is a quiet provincial city. The main risk is the political situation in Belarus: follow your government's travel advice. Petty crime is low.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Belarus before planning any trip.
  • The Jesuit college museum hours are irregular: confirm locally.
  • Struve Arc markers are in fields and forests; wear sturdy shoes and bring a GPS or offline map.
