Chama is a small mountain town in north-central New Mexico, close to the Colorado border, built around a narrow-gauge scenic railroad and high-country outdoor recreation. Most travellers come for one or two nights, ride the train or hike, and use it as a quiet base between Santa Fe, Taos and Pagosa Springs. A car is effectively required.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach Chama and to see anything outside the compact centre. In town, most sights, lodgings and the railroad depot are within walking distance. For Cumbres Pass in winter, a 4WD vehicle with snow tyres is desirable; the road is ploughed often but climbs about 760 m from town. Limited regional commuter bus service connects to Española, with onward links to Santa Fe and Taos.

Safety

Chama is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are long drives, winter mountain roads, altitude and sudden summer storms. Tell someone your route if you head into the backcountry.
  • Distances are long: Albuquerque is about 3 hours by car, Santa Fe about 2 hours.
  • Winter access from Colorado can be difficult; US 84 from the south is generally open year-round.
  • Summer monsoon storms bring sudden rain and lightning in the mountains.
  • Cell coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you drive.
  • The Cumbres & Toltec train fills on summer weekends: reserve ahead.
  • Brazos Cliffs are on private land; access is restricted.
