PampaPampa, Texas

Stop for half a day, not a night: museums on Cuyler Street, a prairie-dog town, then drive on to Amarillo or Borger.

Pampa is a small High Plains town of about 17,000 people on US-60, an hour east of Amarillo. Its draw is a compact downtown of free or cheap local museums — pioneer ranching, a WWII air base, Woody Guthrie's first guitar — plus a prairie-dog colony and two summer rodeos. There is no public transport and no reason to base here for more than one night.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

RV parks (west Kentucky Ave and Hwy 60 East)

City-run and private RV sites; no reservations needed at the city parks.

Watch out

Safety

Pampa is a quiet small town and violent crime is low; the real risks are long empty drives, summer heat, winter ice on US-60 and rattlesnakes off-trail in the grasslands.
  • No public transport: without a car you are stuck.
  • Summer afternoons regularly top 35 °C (95 °F); carry water.
  • Rattlesnakes in the grassland areas south of town — watch your step off-trail.
  • Some downtown museums keep short, volunteer-run hours; call or check before driving out.
