Bacolod is the capital of Negros Occidental and the island's biggest city, known for the October MassKara Festival and for chicken inasal. It is a food-and-heritage stop, not a beach destination: the coast at Punta Taytay is poor. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base and day-trip to Silay, then move on to Sipalay or Cauayan for sand.

Getting around

Jeepneys cover the city and converge on Central Market and Libertad Market; fares start around ₱14 for the first 4 km. Grab is cheap and avoids taxi meter arguments. Tricycles work for short hops downtown. Sidewalks are uneven and often blocked, so walking is slower than the map suggests.

Watch out

Safety

Bacolod is generally calm for tourists. The real annoyances are taxi meter refusals, uneven sidewalks and evening traffic; petty theft is possible in crowded markets, so keep bags zipped.
  • Taxis may refuse the meter and quote a flat fare: decline and take another, or use Grab.
  • Jaywalking is enforced; crossings are hard to spot downtown.
  • Traffic spikes in the early evening and during MassKara and the Christmas period.
  • April can bring water and power shortages in dry years.
