Vegreville
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Yellowhead Highway: the giant pysanka, the caboose and the museum. Sleep only if you are breaking a long drive.
Vegreville is a town of about 5,700 people on Highway 16, roughly 100 km east of Edmonton, built on Ukrainian settlement and grain farming. Its one draw is the world's largest pysanka, a 9 m aluminium Easter egg in Elks/Kinsmen Park, with a free caboose, a small museum and a campground in the same block. Almost nobody needs more than an afternoon here; it works as a break on the Edmonton–Lloydminster drive or as a cheap bed east of Edmonton.

Getting around
You need a car. The town is small but spread along Highway 16A, and there is no local bus. Central Taxi (+1 780-632-6822) covers short hops. Rider Express runs intercity buses on the Edmonton–Regina route with a Vegreville stop. Passenger rail ended in 1975.
