Fakfak is a small port town on the Bird's Head peninsula of West Papua, about 19,000 people, with nutmeg groves, white-sand beaches and prehistoric rock art in the Kokas district. There is no resort infrastructure and few scheduled sights, so it works as a slow 2–3 night stop between Sorong and Manokwari, not as a destination on its own.

Watch out

Safety

Fakfak itself is calm and the main risks are practical: rough roads, few ATMs, malaria, and small planes that cancel in bad weather. Check current travel advice for Papua before booking, and avoid travel after dark outside town.
  • Kokas and the rock-art sites are about 1–1.5 h from town on rough road: go with a driver who knows the turn-offs.
  • Flights are on small ATR aircraft with tight baggage limits and frequent weather delays: keep a buffer day before any onward international flight.
  • Bring cash. ATMs are few and cards are not accepted at most warungs, homestays or boat operators.
  • Malaria is present in lowland Papua: take prophylaxis advice before you travel and use repellent.
  • Swimming and boat trips depend on tides and sea state; ask locally before committing to a crossing.
