Shahhat

Give Shahhat half a day for Cyrene, the Greek city 2 km (1.2 mi) away; skip the town itself if your Libya time is short.

Shahhat is a small coastal town in the Jebel Akhdar of northeastern Libya, 2 km from Cyrene, the Greek colony that became a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town has almost no tourist infrastructure, so it works as a half-day stop or one night inside a guided east Libya route, not as a base.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Libya ↗Check your own government travel advice for Libya before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.

Watch out

Safety

Libya has no functioning tourist police or rescue service in the northeast and the security picture changes week to week: read your own government's travel advice before booking, move only with a local guide or licensed operator, and keep cash and a charged phone on you.
  • Security in Libya is volatile and the northeast is not a walk-around destination: follow your government's travel advice and travel with a vetted local operator.
  • Cyrene has seen looting and site damage; some areas may be fenced or closed — ask locally before walking in.
  • Cash only: Libyan dinars, with official and parallel rates; cards are not usable for visitors.
