Ringwood is a small market town on the western edge of the New Forest, right on the Hampshire-Dorset border and about a mile from the A31/A338 junction. The town is compact and flat, easy to walk in an hour, and its real draw is what sits outside it: heathland country parks, a forest park with bike hire and a narrow-gauge railway, and river fishing on the Avon. Most travellers pass through on the way to Bournemouth or the Jurassic Coast; one night is enough, two if you want a full day outdoors.

Getting around

The town is about a mile wide and mostly flat, so walk it. The Ringo circular bus links the centre, Poulner and the Lidl/Premier Inn. A car is genuinely useful for the country parks and Moors Valley; parking is paid at Meeting House Lane and up to £16 a day at Moors Valley. Evening queues onto the A31 can make walking faster than driving.

A low-crime market town; the practical risks are A31 traffic, unlit lanes and heath paths after dark, and fast-changing weather on the open forest.
  • The A31 runs close to town: expect road noise in west-side rooms.
  • Moors Valley and Avon Heath car parks charge by the day and fill on warm weekends and school holidays.
  • Country park gates close at dusk; check seasonal times before an evening walk.
  • Dogs must be on leads on the heaths March–July (ground-nesting birds) and at Moors Valley.
