Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuttiaq, "good fishing place") is a hamlet of about 1,800 on Victoria Island in western Nunavut, and the largest settlement on the island. There is little conventional sightseeing: you come to see how a remote Arctic community lives, walk the tundra, and watch for muskox. Two to three nights covers it, and the town itself is small enough to cross on foot in about 15 minutes.

Getting around

No taxis and no rental cars as of 2025. The hamlet is walkable in about 15 minutes in summer, but roads are mud and gravel, and in winter you walk in snow and extreme cold. Locals give rides; ask at your lodge. Ovayok Territorial Park is 15 km east, reached by vehicle or a long hike.

Watch out

Safety

Crime is not the issue; cold, distance and cost are. Walk with a local in winter, tell someone your route to Ovayok, and treat the RCMP number as your first call.
  • No taxi service and no car rental: arrange airport pickup with your lodge before you fly.
  • Groceries are flown in and very expensive; bring some of your own food.
  • Winter cold is dangerous: no thaw between 31 Oct and 19 Apr, so pack for it.
  • Phone coverage is limited to Northwestel/Bell/Telus and the Qiniq network; download offline maps.
  • Card payment is not universal in small stores: carry some cash.
