Santa Maria is a working Central Coast town on Highway 101, halfway between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, and the home of Santa Maria-style barbecue: tri-tip cooked whole over red oak. There is little sightseeing in town, so most travellers use it as a cheap bed and a meal stop, or as a base for the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes and the Santa Maria Valley wine trail.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, wineries and the dunes are spread out and buses are limited. Santa Maria Regional Transit covers the city and runs to Lompoc and Vandenberg, with service ending in the evening — check the last bus before you rely on it. Regional buses link San Luis Obispo and Guadalupe; Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner stops at Guadalupe, with a connecting bus into Santa Maria.

Watch out

Safety

Santa Maria is a normal working town, not a resort: daytime downtown and the shopping corridors are fine, but avoid walking alone at night away from lit main roads, and keep bags out of sight in parked cars.
  • Almost everything needs a car; do not book a hotel expecting to walk to the wineries or dunes.
  • Summer afternoons inland can pass 35 °C, while the coast 20 min west stays cool and foggy — pack layers.
  • The dunes and beach at Guadalupe have soft sand, wind and no lifeguards; check conditions before swimming.
  • Some Highway 101 stretches and the wine trail are dark and unlit at night; watch for deer and cyclists.
