Give Whangarei one night as a stop between Auckland and the Bay of Islands, or two if you want the Hundertwasser centre and a beach day.
Whangarei is the biggest town in Northland and the practical break on the drive north from Auckland, about two hours up State Highway 1. The Town Basin holds the Hundertwasser Art Centre and the clock museum within a short walk; the waterfalls, quarry gardens and the Heads sit outside the centre and need a car. Most travellers use it for a night, or as a base for diving at the Poor Knights.

Citylink buses cover the centre and most suburbs, including the airport, roughly every 30 min at peak and hourly otherwise, every two hours at weekends; adult fare about $3, Bee card preferred, cash accepted. A car is the practical choice for the falls, the quarry gardens, the beaches and Whangarei Heads. InterCity coaches link Auckland (just under 3 h) and Kaitaia.
