Preston is a rural town of about 4,700 people in southeastern Connecticut, between Norwich, Ledyard and Montville. It has no town centre to speak of, a handful of National Register historic districts, two big casinos within a 15-minute drive, and almost no public transport. You need a car. Most travellers use it for one night near Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun, or as a quiet, cheaper alternative to Mystic.

Getting around

A car is required. Routes 2, 2A, 164 and 165 are the only ways in and out, and there is no useful bus. Casino shuttles run from the casinos themselves, not from town. Walking on the main roads is not advisable because of casino traffic; back roads are quiet and fine for a walk.

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are driving — deer at dusk, casino-weekend traffic on Route 2 — and trespassing at the old hospital site, which is patrolled.
  • Do not enter the Norwich State Hospital site: it is fenced, patrolled and being demolished. View from the road only.
  • Casino traffic on Route 2 and Route 2A is heavy on weekend evenings.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads.
  • Some campgrounds are membership-only or seasonal: confirm before you drive out.
