Nome is a town of about 4,000 people on the Bering Sea coast, reachable only by air or the Iditarod Trail. It is the finish line of the Iditarod and the Iron Dog, and the base for gold-rush history, Inupiat culture and tundra day trips. Two or three nights covers the town; add a night for a Nome-Council Road run to Safety Roadhouse.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk in summer, but winter wind and ice make that unpleasant. Rent a car from JB Rentals or Aurora Inn for the Nome-Council and Nome-Teller dirt roads; taxis cover short hops. There is no road out of the region.

Safety

Nome is small and generally safe by day; the real risks are winter cold and wind, unserviced dirt roads, and alcohol-fuelled trouble around Front Street bars at night. Carry cash, tell someone your road plan, and keep a buffer day for flights.
  • Flights are the only link: build a buffer day before any onward connection, and expect weather delays in winter.
  • Winter wind chill and ice: layers, windproof shell, and shoes with grip; frostbite risk on exposed skin.
  • Dirt roads (Nome-Council, Nome-Teller) are unserviced and can be impassable after rain; carry water, food and a spare tyre.
  • Bars and saloons: ask the total before you sit, and keep to Front Street after dark.
  • No ATMs or card readers in the villages; carry cash for road stops.
