Yakutsk is the capital of Yakutia and the coldest big city on earth: January averages about -42°C, July about +19°C, and the record range runs from -64°C to +38°C. Two or three nights covers the cryogenic museums, the Old City and the mammoth collections; the surrounding Lena countryside and the ice roads are the real reason people come. Winter fog can close the airport for days, so build slack into any onward flight.

Getting around

Buses and marshrutkas are the only public transport and cover the whole city; a ride is a flat low fare and children under seven ride free. Taxis are cheap and metered by negotiation — apps such as inDrive and Yandex Taxi usually beat the official companies. Cross-town taxi runs about RUB 100–120; a car by the hour about RUB 350.

Watch out

Safety

Yakutsk is a normal Russian regional capital and the main risks are environmental: -40°C frostbite in winter, smoke and mosquitoes in summer, and fog-stranding at the airport. Follow your government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
  • Winter fog can close Yakutsk airport for days; airlines here do not provide hotels or meals to stranded passengers, so carry emergency money.
  • Museum exhibits are labelled in Russian only; bring a translation app.
  • The Mammoth Museum's preserved mammoth head travels, so confirm it is on display before you go.
  • Do not attempt the Kolyma Highway to Magadan on a whim; it is serious expedition travel.
  • The Lena crossing fails in May and October — no ferry, no ice road.
