DunedinDunedin, Florida

Give Dunedin 2 nights, not 1: downtown plus Honeymoon Island or Caladesi is a full day, and the beach ferry eats a half-day.

Dunedin is a small Gulf-coast town in Pinellas County, about 37,000 people, with a walkable Main Street and no chain signage downtown. It is a base for two state-park beaches, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, and the Pinellas Trail runs through the middle of town. Two nights covers downtown, the causeway and one beach day; three if you want a spring-training game or a day trip north.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable. Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) buses run along Main Street and connect to Clearwater and St. Petersburg; the Jolley Trolley loops downtown on Friday–Sunday, roughly hourly, stopping on Main Street near Pioneer Park. For the causeway, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi ferry, a car or rideshare is the practical option.

Watch out

Safety

Dunedin is a low-crime small town; the real risks are summer heat, rip currents on the Gulf beaches and hurricane-season storms. Lock your car and don't leave valuables on the beach.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan beach time before 11:00 and carry water.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November, peak August–October; check storm forecasts and know your evacuation zone.
  • The Caladesi Island ferry is weather-dependent and can sell out; check the operator before you drive out.
  • Honeymoon Island and Caladesi charge state-park entry; the causeway itself is free.
  • Spring-training and festival weekends (Feb–Mar, April Highland Games, November Celtic Festival) push hotel prices up.
