Batad is a village of under 1,500 people inside the Ifugao rice terraces, part of the UNESCO-listed Cordillera terraces, and it is the finest place to see them. No road reaches it: you walk in from the Saddle or the end of the road, and everything inside moves on foot along terrace walls and concrete stairs. Two nights is the working minimum — one to arrive and settle, one full day for Tappiyah Falls and the ridge viewpoints. Lodges are basic, cash is king, and rain can close the trails.

Getting around

On foot only — no vehicles of any kind in the village. Paths run along terrace walls and concrete stairs; some sections need mild scrambling and are slippery after rain. Locals will point you the right way; a local guide for the day costs around ₱400–500 and is worth it for Tappiyah Falls and Patpat.

Watch out

Safety

Batad is a small, low-crime village and the main risks are physical: slick terrace paths, steep stairs, river crossings after rain and no medical facility nearby. Carry cash, water and a headlamp, and tell your lodge where you are walking.
  • Agree the exact drop-off point before you pay a tricycle: 'Batad' sometimes means the Junction, which is up to an hour uphill to the Saddle.
  • The last jeepney out to Banaue leaves early morning — be at the road end by about 09:00 or you walk.
  • Trails and terrace walls get slick in rain; wear grip shoes, not sandals.
  • Bring enough cash for the whole stay: there is no ATM and card payment is not reliable.
  • The ₱50 (≈ under US$1) environmental and heritage fee is collected at a booth on the path into the village.
