Inukjuakᐃᓄᒃᔪᐊᒃ

Go only if you have a reason to be in Nunavik: 2 nights covers the museum, the shoreline and a boat or snowmobile run; there is no road in.

Inukjuak is a village of about 1,600 on the east shore of Hudson Bay, reachable year-round only by air and in summer by boat. There is one hotel, one museum and no road out. Two nights covers the village; most visitors come for work, family, or a specific Arctic activity rather than for sightseeing.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk in summer, though the ground is rough and often wet. In winter and spring, snowmobile is the local way to move and to reach the land and sea ice. There is no public transport and no road out of the village; taxis are limited, so arrange lifts through your hotel.

Watch out

Safety

Inukjuak is a small, quiet community and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are cold, weather-delayed flights, rough ground, and travelling on sea ice or open water without a local guide.
  • No road access: you arrive by air, or by boat in the open-water season only.
  • Winter temperatures fall far below freezing and wind chill is severe: bring a real parka, not a city coat.
  • Summer is damp and unsettled, with rain on many days in August and September.
  • Services are few: one co-op store, one hotel, limited food choice. Bring any medication you need.
  • Alcohol is restricted in Nunavik communities: check the rules before you pack or buy.
  • Do not approach wildlife or disturb hunting camps; local hunting and fishing take priority.
