Göttingen
Give Göttingen one full day plus a night: walk the old town, climb the wall, then use it as a rail stop between Hanover and Frankfurt or Berlin.
Göttingen is a university town in southern Lower Saxony, 30 minutes south of Hanover on the ICE line and about 2 hours from Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin. The old town survived the war largely intact, so the half-timbered houses and the medieval wall are original. A fifth of the population are students, which shapes the pubs, the cycling and the calendar. Most travellers see it in a day; it works well as a stop on a north-south rail trip rather than a multi-night base.
