Dumai is Riau's main port on the Malacca Strait and the reason most travellers see it at all: ferries to Malacca, Port Klang and Port Dickson in Malaysia, plus Batam, Bintan and Bengkalis, and road links to Pekanbaru and Medan. The town itself is small, hot and short on sights — a half-day walk covers the centre. Plan it as a transit night with a buffer for immigration and weather, not as a stay.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in about half a day. Grab works in the city and is the easiest way to reach the ferry terminal or bus station; agree the fare first if you take a tricycle or unmarked car. Delman (horse carts) run at Taman Bukit Gelanggang on Jl. Sudirman.

Watch out

Safety

Dumai is a working port town, not a resort: petty theft and pushy touts around the ferry terminal are the real issues. Keep bags close, book transport by app, and do not accept unsolicited 'help' with hotels or women.
  • Ferry and bus touts at the terminal: book a Grab before you walk out, or walk fast to your hotel.
  • Terminal gates for passengers and cargo sit side by side — check you are at the passenger gate.
  • Malacca ferries ask for an onward/exit ticket at purchase; an open return is the usual workaround.
  • Roads to Pekanbaru and Medan are slow and often in poor condition; allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • Ramadan: many local eateries close at lunch; chains and Chinese-run restaurants stay open.
