Nieuwegein is a planned city of about 68,000 people, built from 1971 around the older villages of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, roughly 5 km south of Utrecht and just north of the Lek. It has no train station, so almost everyone arrives by tram or bus from Utrecht Centraal. The old Vreeswijk harbour, the Oudegein park and windmill, and a handful of activity venues are the reasons to come; most travellers see it as a half-day from Utrecht rather than a place to sleep.

Distances inside the city are long and there is no train. Trams 20 and 21 and buses 65, 66, 74 and 77 link the districts and Utrecht Centraal; check the destination before boarding, as routes differ. A bike is the fastest way around; taxis are limited.

Safety

Nieuwegein is a normal, low-risk Dutch suburb; the practical issues are long unlit stretches between districts at night, bike traffic, and tram or bus stops that empty out after the last service.
  • No train station: all rail trips go via Utrecht Centraal.
  • Buses from Utrecht Centraal serve different Nieuwegein routes — check the destination board.
  • Motorway exits named Nieuwegein sit on three different roads (A2, A12, A27); know which one your hotel is near.
  • Rush hour on the A2, A12 and A27 is slow; allow extra time if driving.
  • The Lek ferry to Vianen carries pedestrians and cyclists only.
