Muriwai

Go as a half-day from Auckland for the gannet colony and black-sand beach; sleep here only if you surf or want the coast at dawn.

Muriwai is a black-ironsand surf beach and small village 42 km west of Auckland, inside Muriwai Regional Park. Its one unmissable sight is the gannet colony on Otakamiro Point, the most accessible in New Zealand. Most visitors come for two to four hours; surfers and beach drivers stay longer.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

A car is the practical option: no train or bus reaches Muriwai. From Auckland take the Northwestern Motorway, continue on State Highway 16 and turn off at Waimauku onto Muriwai Rd. In the village you walk between the beach, the point and the café. Driving on the hard sand is allowed with a 4WD or motorcycle, headlights on, 30 km/h south of Okiritoto Stream and 60 km/h north of it; the northern beach is open only within about three hours either side of low tide.

Watch out

Safety

Safe for a beach visit in daylight. The real risks are the surf, the fishing rocks and the tide when driving on sand; there is no lifeguard outside summer patrol hours.
  • Rock fishing at the southern rocks has killed people swept off by surf: wear a life jacket, never gumboots, and skip it in any swell.
  • Swim only between the lifeguards' flags; the west coast has rips and dumpy waves.
  • Beach driving: soft sand, tide surges and sweeper waves catch vehicles; check the tide before you go north.
  • No fires or solid-fuel barbecues on the beach or in the park.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the beach and in the pines.
