Changbaishan is a dormant volcano on the China–North Korea border, and its crater lake, Tianchi (Heaven Lake), is the reason almost everyone comes. The reserve has two separate entrances about 100 km apart: the north slope, reached from Baihe/Erdao Baihezhen, has the waterfall, hot springs and the 4WD run to the rim; the west slope, reached from Songjianghe, has a long stair climb to the lake and the Changbaishan Canyon. Cars are banned inside, so you move by park shuttle and, for the crater, by 4WD. Cloud cover is the single biggest variable: the lake sits in a bowl and is often invisible from the rim even on a fine day lower down.

- The frontier at Tianchi is not clearly marked and foreigners have been detained after crossing it. Stay well back from the far shore and do not follow anyone past the marked viewpoint.

The hot spring bathhouse is extra. West-slope visitors skip the 4WD and climb the stairs instead. Treat all figures as 2026 estimates and confirm at the gate.
What are the best hikes in Changbaishan National Nature Reserve?
The riverside walk between Green Deep Pool and Small Sky Pond is the easiest proper walk, about an hour each way. The Underground Forest is a 30-minute loop in a tree-filled crater. On the west slope, the boardwalk through Changbaishan Canyon takes about 40 minutes, and the stair climb to the Heaven Lake rim is over 900 steps. Anything off the marked routes needs a guide.
When is the best time to visit Changbaishan National Nature Reserve?
July to September for open access and the best chance of a clear crater. Early September is popular and busy. From October to May snow makes access difficult and the crater routes often close; June and October are shoulder months with fewer crowds but a higher chance of closures or a frozen lake.
Can I see Heaven Lake from both entrances?
Yes, but they are different trips. The north slope uses a 4WD to the rim plus a short walk. The west slope uses a shuttle and then over 900 stairs. The two gates are about 100 km and 2 hours apart, so pick one per day rather than trying both.
Do I need a guide?
No for the marked tourist routes. Yes for any hiking away from them — arrange a guide in advance and do not walk alone.
Can I walk around Heaven Lake?
No. The lake is 13 km around and marks the China–North Korea border, so you view it from the Chinese rim only. The border is not clearly marked and foreigners have been detained after straying across it.
Where should I stay?
Baihe (Erdao Baihezhen) for the north slope, about 20 km from the gate, or Songjianghe for the west slope, about 40 minutes out. A few hotels sit inside the north-slope area near the waterfall; they are expensive but let you be in the park before and after the crowds.
