Rotorua sits on an active geothermal field: steam vents, boiling mud and hot pools are inside the city limits, and about 38% of residents are Māori, so this is the easiest place in New Zealand to see a pōwhiri, a haka and a hāngī in one evening. Two nights covers the paid geothermal parks, the Whakarewarewa redwoods and a lake or rafting half-day. The whole town smells faintly of hydrogen sulphide; most people stop noticing within an hour.

Getting around

The city is spread out and buses are limited: Cityride (Baybus) runs several routes including Ngongotahā and the airport, with the main terminus at Fenton/Arawa Street. A car or a bike makes the geothermal parks, the redwoods and the lakes far easier. Rotorua is a serious mountain-bike town, with hire shops in the CBD and at the forest.

Watch out

Safety

Rotorua is a normal, safe tourist town by day; the real risks are scalding geothermal ground, thefts from parked cars at trailheads and hot-stream car parks, and unlit parks after dark. Standard NZ street sense applies.
  • Hydrogen sulphide gives the town a rotten-egg smell; harmless at these levels but noticeable on arrival.
  • Stay on marked paths at geothermal areas: ground can be scalding and crusts can collapse.
  • Do not swim in untreated hot pools or put your head under; Kuirau Park footbaths are hot early, cold later in the evening.
  • Thefts from cars at trailheads and hot-stream car parks are reported: lock up and leave nothing visible.
  • Kuirau Park has reports of crime after dark; visit in daylight.
  • One-lane bridges and narrow, winding rural roads on the SH5 and SH33 approaches.
