Pamukkale is a village under a white hillside of travertine terraces, with the Roman spa city of Hierapolis on the plateau above. Both sit inside one ticketed area with three gates. Most travellers see it in a single night between the Aegean coast and Denizli, or as a long day trip from the coast resorts. Summer crowds, barefoot walking and midday heat decide how the day goes.

Getting around

The village is walkable: Town Gate, the museum and the restaurants are within 15 minutes. Dolmuşes run to Karahayit and past North Gate; South Gate is easiest by taxi or tour bus. Car hire is available in Denizli, some with delivery to village hotels.

Guesthouses and small hotels on Atatürk Cd and the lanes off it, 5–15 min walk from Town Gate. Best for an early or late entry.

Karahayit

4 km north, a spa strip with thermal hotels and the red springs; quieter, needs a dolmuş or car to reach the main site.

Denizli

20 km south, a working city with more beds and the bus station; only worth it if you arrive late or leave early.

Watch out

Safety

The site is well policed and the village is calm. Real risks are midday heat with no shade, slippery barefoot travertine, and ticket charges in lira when the price is quoted in euros.
  • Shoes are not allowed on the travertine; the Town Gate ascent is barefoot and can be slippery.
  • Ticket prices are quoted in euros but card payments are charged in lira: check the conversion and the amount before you pay.
  • A compulsory audio headset is added to the ticket price; check the current policy and total before you pay.
  • In dry spells and late summer the terrace pools can be empty.
  • North Gate is a 2 km walk on a rough trail or a paid shuttle; do not arrive there expecting a short stroll.
