Bavaro
A 3–5 night beach base: white sand, resort pools and water sports. Skip if you want quiet or local culture; stay if you want easy all-inclusive beach time.
Bavaro is the beach strip east of Punta Cana, lined with all-inclusive resorts, a long white-sand beach and calm turquoise water. It has almost no town centre or nightlife outside resorts. Most visitors stay 3–5 nights and never leave the resort grounds. It works best as a pure beach-and-pool stop after Santo Domingo.

- Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
- Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
- Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
- Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
- Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
- Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Resort shuttles or taxis. No public transport worth using. Walking along the beach is fine between resorts. A rental car is unnecessary unless you plan day trips.
