State College is a small college town wrapped around Penn State's University Park campus, about 40,000 residents plus 45,000 students. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside a 2 km walk of College Avenue, so two nights covers it. The catch is football: on seven or so autumn Saturdays the town swells past 110,000 people, hotel rates jump and rooms sell out weeks out. Come midweek in spring or early autumn for the campus, the arboretum and the food, and treat the surrounding ridges as a separate driving day.

Getting around

Downtown and campus are walkable; CATA buses cover the county and run free loops through the centre and campus, with most routes running roughly 06:00 to 02:30 (check current timetables). A car helps for the arboretum, Shaver's Creek and Rothrock State Forest. Bikes work well: there are dedicated paths and lanes, and Rothrock has mountain-bike trails.

Safety

Very safe for a US town of this size; the real risks are winter ice, dark rural roads at night and heavy drinking around campus bars on weekends.
  • Football weekends: rooms sell out and prices spike; book months ahead or avoid the dates.
  • Winter ice on pavements and steps; bring grip soles from December to March.
  • Megabus uses a Walmart car park on North Atherton Street, not the downtown bus station — check which stop your ticket names.
