  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Beverly Hills is a 5.7 sq mi city inside Los Angeles County, population about 34,000, built on shopping and the idea of celebrity. Almost everything a visitor wants — Rodeo Drive, the Paley Center, the restaurants on Canon and Beverly Drives — sits in a walkable triangle under 2 km across. Hotels are the most expensive in the region, so most travellers visit by day from West Hollywood or Santa Monica and spend their room budget elsewhere.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The shopping and dining core is under 2 km across and the city's public garages fill early. Metro Rapid 720 runs along Wilshire Blvd (Downtown LA–Koreatown–Beverly Hills–Westwood–Santa Monica) and Rapid 704 along Santa Monica Blvd (Downtown LA–Hollywood–West Hollywood–Beverly Hills–Century City–Santa Monica). Rideshares are easy; a car is a liability between 11:00 and 19:00.

Pier, beach and a different evening; the bus is slow in rush hour.

Venice, California

Boardwalk and canals; go before 11:00 for parking and light.

Rideshare or bus via Santa Monica Blvd and Robertson Blvd

Downtown Culver City for food and the Expo Line into LA.

Malibu

caution

Door to door: 45–75 min

Car via Sunset Blvd and the Pacific Coast Highway

A half-day minimum; the coast road backs up on weekends.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Beverly Hills (Wilshire, Canon, Beverly)

Walk to Rodeo, the restaurants and the parking garages; the priciest rooms and the only area where you can leave the car parked.

Burton Way / Doheny edge

Quieter, tree-lined, 15–20 min walk to Rodeo; big luxury hotels and easier street parking.

South of Wilshire (Lasky Dr, South Santa Monica Blvd)

Smaller boutique hotels, the cheapest beds inside the city line, 10 min walk to Rodeo.

Watch out

Safety

One of the safest parts of Los Angeles County for visitors; the real risks are traffic, heat in summer and parking fines. Keep to lit streets at night and use rideshares after dark.
  • Parking is the main friction: city garages fill by late morning and street meters are short. Park once and walk.
  • Oversized pickup trucks and SUVs over 6,000 lb are banned on city streets — a real rule, not a rumour.
  • Following celebrities to their homes is treated as stalking; guided tours are the legal way to see the streets.
  • Prices on menus and in shops are before sales tax, and sit-down service expects 18–22% tipping.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LAX and BUR: rideshare and taxi bands by hour, plus a fallback for the 405 at peak.
  2. Four walking clusters with anchors: Rodeo and Two Rodeo, Canon and Beverly Drives, the Paley Center, Greystone and the north residential grid.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and ticket rules (Greystone Mansion, Paley Center, city garages) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile-arrival fixtures: garage-full, event-night and heat-day scenarios so gates A–D can go green.
