  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city and the service town for the Southland plains: wide 1900s streets, two serious vehicle museums, and the gateway to Bluff, Stewart Island and the Catlins. The city itself fills a day; the region fills three. Weather is cool and changeable year-round, so plan indoor sights as the wet-weather fallback.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes. Six council bus routes run hourly on weekdays (about 07:20–17:20) and a shorter Saturday service; pay cash or with a Bee Card. Bluff is served by InterCity coach, but a car helps for the Catlins, Demolition World and the Awarua museum, which buses do not reach.

The Catlins

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h to Balclutha, then 1–2 h on to the coast

Car via the Southern Scenic Route (SH 92) off SH 1 at Balclutha; the falls and coast are spread along the route

Waterfalls, forest and coast over a wide area; allow a full day or sleep one night on the route.

Stewart Island

overnight

Door to door: About 2.5–3 h via Bluff

Car or coach to Bluff, then the ferry (about 1 h) or a 20-min flight from Invercargill Airport

Book ferry and beds ahead in summer; day trips are rushed.

Watch out

Safety

Invercargill is a small, generally safe city; the real risks are weather and driving. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight in the CBD at night, and watch for ice on Southland roads in winter.
  • Weather turns fast: 4 seasons in a day is normal, carry a rain shell year-round.
  • Small-town kitchens close by 20:00–21:00; eat early or cook.
  • Aurora displays are never guaranteed and city light pollution is real: drive out of town or go to Stewart Island.
  • Some sights keep very short hours (Awarua museum Sundays only, Demolition World closed Sunday): check before you drive out.
