Carmel Point is the residential headland south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, where Scenic Drive runs past Tor House, the Clinton Walker House and the beach. There is no commercial centre, no hotels on the point itself and almost no street lighting. Treat it as a 1–2 hour coastal walk from the village, or a sunset drive, and sleep in Carmel village or Monterey.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see Scenic Drive and the coastline; the village and beach are walkable. Monterey-Salinas Transit buses 1, 2 and 24 link Monterey and Carmel, with bus 24 continuing to Carmel Valley; there is little service around the point itself. Street parking is free for a couple of hours in places, and Scenic Drive often has free roadside spaces. Bicycling is possible but the roads are hilly, narrow and windy.

Safety

Very safe by US standards; the real risks are the cold, current-heavy ocean, unlit roads at night and fog that hides cyclists and pedestrians on Scenic Drive.
  • There are no street numbers in the village: navigate by street name and the nearest cross street.
  • Almost no street lights at night — carry a light and watch for cyclists and dogs on Scenic Drive.
  • The ocean here is cold with strong currents and riptides; swimming is for cold-water, experienced swimmers only.
  • Point Lobos charges per vehicle and closes when the lot fills; arrive early or you will be turned away.
  • Tor House tours run on a limited schedule and need booking ahead — check the official site.
  • Summer fog can sit on the point all day while Carmel Valley is sunny.
