Fort Qu'Appelle is a town of about 2,000 people in the Qu'Appelle Valley, 70 km northeast of Regina on Highway 10, sitting between Echo Lake and Mission Lake. It was a Hudson's Bay Company post from 1852 and lost the territorial capital vote to Regina in 1882. Today it is a service town for the valley: a small museum, a provincial park with two beaches, a nine-hole golf course and winter ski trails. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the Regina-to-Yorkton drive or a weekend cabin base.

A car is the practical choice: the museum, park, golf course and ski hill are spread along the valley and Highway 10/35. Shylo's Taxi (+1 306-331-0330) covers short hops in town. Walking works for Broadway Street and Bay Avenue only.

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 10 and 35, thin services after dark, and lake ice that is never safe to trust without local confirmation.
  • Distances are long and winter roads ice up: check the Highway Hotline before driving in snow.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy in the valley and on back roads.
  • Many seasonal businesses close from October to May: confirm before you drive out.
  • Do not confuse this town with Qu'Appelle, 28 km south on the Trans-Canada Highway.
