Barry's Bay is a village of about 1,300 people in the Township of Madawaska Valley, at the junction of Highway 60 and Highway 62 and roughly 185 km west of Ottawa. It is the second-closest town to the east side of Algonquin Provincial Park, so it fills with people who want a bed instead of a tent. The sights take half a day; the reason to stay is the park, the rivers and the quiet.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no public transit, no scheduled bus into town and the nearest taxis are in Pembroke, about 45 min away. Highway 60 runs west through the park past Whitney; Highway 62 runs south to Maynooth and Belleville. Fuel up in town before heading into the park.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the drive (moose at dawn and dusk, winter ice), no cell signal in the park, and swimming or paddling cold, fast river water without a life jacket.
  • No taxis and no bus service in town: arrange every ride before you arrive.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 60 inside Algonquin Park; download offline maps.
  • Moose and deer on the road at dawn and dusk, especially in the park.
  • Black flies in late May and June, mosquitoes into July: bring repellent and long sleeves.
  • Many seasonal businesses shut from October to May; check before you drive.
