Pasargad

Half-day stop from Shiraz: see the Tomb of Cyrus and the palace ruins, then move on. One hour on site is enough; add 30 min for the gardens.

Pasargad is the site of the Achaemenid capital and the tomb of Cyrus the Great, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ruins are spread over a few kilometres and can be seen in 2–3 hours. Most travellers visit as a half-day trip from Shiraz, often combined with Persepolis. There are no restaurants on site and limited accommodation nearby.

Watch out

Safety

Pasargad is a quiet archaeological site; petty crime is rare. The main risks are heatstroke in summer and unreliable transport back to Shiraz after sunset.
  • No restaurants on site: bring food and water.
  • The Tomb of Cyrus is covered by scaffolding and a corrugated iron roof (check current state).
  • Extreme summer heat: visit early morning or late afternoon.
  • Last savari back to Shiraz may leave by late afternoon; confirm timing.
