Galashiels is a former Borders mill town of about 12,600 people, 53 km south of Edinburgh and an hour away by train. Its own draw is the Great Tapestry of Scotland, a 143 m textile telling of Scottish history, plus Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford House a short bus ride east. Most travellers pass through on the Borders railway or the X95 bus rather than stay.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable: the Interchange rail and bus station, High Street and the tapestry are all within about 10 minutes on foot. Buses towards Melrose and Tweedbank run every 30 minutes or so and stop near Abbotsford House. Five Star is the main local taxi firm.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are rural roads with no pavement, fast A7 traffic and thin Sunday buses. Standard UK advice: 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-urgent police.
  • The railway ends at Tweedbank; there is no line south to Hawick or Carlisle, so plan buses for the Borders loop.
  • Several sights run seasonal hours only: check the Great Tapestry and Old Gala House before you travel.
  • Rural buses thin out sharply on Sundays, especially south of Hawick.
  • A7 closures are likely when the Tour de France passes through on 2 July 2027: check local media.
