Ikkiss

Skip Ikkiss as a destination unless you're a fit hiker on a multi-day High Atlas trek: it's a 4-hour walk from Imlil with no accommodation and no shops.

Ikkiss is a tiny High Atlas village at 2,000 m, reachable only on foot or by an infrequent truck. It has no guesthouse, no café and no road to the valley floor. Its reason to visit is the walk itself — crossing the Tizi n'Tamatert pass from Imlil — and the terraced fields and mountain views. Most travellers pass through on the way to Tacheddirt or back to Imlil.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Morocco ↗Check entry rules for your passport with the Moroccan consulate or official government sources before booking; visa exemptions depend on nationality.
  • Morocco ↗The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency: you normally obtain it on arrival (ATMs, exchange desks) and change leftovers back before departure, keeping exchange receipts.
  • Morocco ↗Do not bring a drone without prior authorisation: drones are routinely confiscated at customs.
  • Morocco ↗During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in the street in daylight; tourist restaurants and hotels still serve.

Safety

The main risks are the mountain pass (snow, steep drops) and lack of services. Carry a map, water and a phone with offline GPS. No official rescue service in the valley; the gendarmerie in Asni is the nearest.
  • No accommodation, no shop, no café: carry all food and water, and plan to sleep in Imlil or Tacheddirt.
  • The track from Imlil is a mountain pass (Tizi n'Tamatert) at about 2,300 m; snow can block it in winter.
  • Flooding can wash out the track; check conditions in Imlil before setting out.
  • No phone signal in parts of the valley.
