Portobelo is a Caribbean harbour village of under 3,000 people, 1.5 hours from Panama City by road. Its Spanish fort ruins and the San Lorenzo pair are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the bay is a base for diving, kayaking and boats heading to Colombia. The village itself is small: one road along the water, a church, a customs house museum and a handful of places to eat. Most travellers see it in a few hours or stay one night; two nights only if you dive or hike the national park.
