Base here 1–2 nights only if you have a car: the creamery, the blimp hangar and the Three Capes loop need driving, and the beach villages sleep better.
Tillamook is a dairy town at the head of Tillamook Bay, the service centre for the Three Capes Scenic Area and the largest town on this stretch of the northern Oregon Coast. Almost everything worth doing sits outside the grid of US-101: a working cheese visitor centre, a WWII blimp hangar, and the beaches and headlands of Oceanside, Netarts and Cape Lookout. Without a car you can reach the town, not the coast.

Getting around
A car is effectively required: sights are 10–25 min apart on OR-131 and US-101, and buses do not serve the capes. TCTD Route 1 loops the town hourly ($1.50), Route 3 runs north to Cannon Beach and Manzanita, Route 4 south to Lincoln City, and Route 5 reaches Portland twice daily. Fill up in Tillamook — fuel is scarce on the loop.

Safety
- Rain is the default from October to May: waterproof jacket, and check for landslide or road-closure alerts on OR-131 and the capes loop.
- The Bayocean–Oceanside shortcut over Cape Meares has been closed after storm damage — check before routing; the detour adds time.
- Beach and bay water stays cold year-round and sneaker waves are real on the open coast: never turn your back on the surf, and watch children at inlets.
- Cell signal drops on the cape roads and in the state park; download maps offline.
- Tasting rooms and small kitchens keep short, seasonal hours — check the day's hours before driving out.
