Witham is a small Essex market town on the Great Eastern Main Line, about 45 minutes from London Liverpool Street and roughly midway between Chelmsford and Colchester. It has a walkable centre, a river walk and a handful of pubs and cafés, but almost no sightseeing of its own. Most travellers pass through or use it as a cheap bed for Colchester, Chelmsford or London rather than a destination.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes. Three minibus services loop the housing estates; taxis are easy to find. National Cycle Route 16 passes through town, linking Bishop's Stortford to Southend-on-Sea.
